Dermanplaning is the latest way to exfoliate your face. It sounds easy, and YouTube videos are showing at-home dermaplaning, but would you really take a blade and scrape dead skin off your face if you don’t know what you are doing?

Is dermaplaning effective?

Dermanplaning treatment has been done for decades, and if done correctly it is perfectly safe. Your dermatologist or certified aesthetician will use a sterile blade and practiced standard movement. It’s similar to shaving, but I wouldn’t ask my barber to dermaplan my face.

If you have a tan, sunburn, active, acne, rosacea breakout, or an inflammatory skin condition like eczema or psoriasis you might want to avoid dermaplaning.

You can’t do this efficiently, but an aesthetician will gently pull your skin tightly and lightly glide the blade in an upward motion. They use delicate feathering strokes, and dermaplaning can be done in about 10 to 20 minutes. Dermaplaning can be a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with a facial.

  • Shaving with a single blade using small upward strokes to remove the dead layer of skin.
  • It can be done every three to four weeks.
  • Improved hyperpigmentation. Your skin’s color will look more even and smoother.
  • Skin tone and texture are improved.
  • You have younger-looking and glowing skin. Dermaplaning reduces the visible ages of aging.
  • Dermaplaning helps with acne problems.
  • Dermaplaning reduces the thickness of the top layer of your skin and corrects dull complexions and acne problems.
  • Safe for pregnant clients.
  • Makeup goes on smoothly and evenly after dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning will make your skin feel seriously smooth and look great. You have exfoliated away some of the damage to your skin, and some dermatologists claim that dermaplaning helps improve how creams and serums are absorbed into your skin.

Claims that dermaplaning can stimulate collagen or improve pigmentation have not been proven, but it can’t hurt! The treatment is manual versus chemical peels and is a good alternative that works well for all skin types.
